The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco was established in 1910 by Prince Albert I. Their aquarium is one the oldest aquariums in the world. They are deigned to create and the complex ecosystem of the ocean. In addition to their extensive collection of sea creatures the Oceanographic Institute is world famous for carrying out explorations of the ocean and presenting their research to the public. The director of the Oceanographic museum from 1957 to 1988 was Jacques-Yves Cousteau.
The façade of the Oceanographic Museum is built into a cliff faces above the Mediterranean Sea. it rises to 279' above sea level. It is constructed of stone blocks in the Baroque Revival style and took 11 years to build.
Stamp was issued by Monaco on March 5, 1949 as part of a series of eight pictorial stamps. The view is from the pedestrian path that follow the base of the cliff below more recently built the building on top of which is the Monoco State Park.
