Les Forges du Saint-Maurice
La fondation des Forges du Saint-Maurice en 1730 marque les débuts de l'industrie du fer au Canada et mène à la création de la première communauté industrielle du pays. Construite à proximité d'une source de minerai de fer et desservie par une abondante force hydraulique, l'entreprise s'est développée autour d'un haut fourneau et de deux forges. Les premières années, les Forges produisaient du fer pour les chantiers navals et les arsenaux royaux. The founding of les Forges du Saint-Maurice in 1730 marked the beginnings of Canada's iron industry and led to the creation of the country's first industrial community. Built near a source of iron ore and served by abundant water power, the enterprise grew around a blast furnace and two forges. In the early years, les Forges turned out iron for shipyards and royal arsenals. Later, production responded to the domestic needs of the country, including the building of railways. The complex shut down in 1883, after more than 150 years of operation.
