Malmö is Sweden's third largest city with 324,002 (2020) inhabitants.
Malmö emerged as a market town around the middle of the 13th century. Since the city is located in Scania, it was part of Denmark until the Swedish conquest of eastern Denmark in the 17th century.
In 1712 there were 600 houses in Malmö. Because of the plague, so many people died that half of the houses stood empty.
Malmøhus Castle is built from 1526-1530 by King Frederik the 1st.
In 1828, Malmøhus became a prison. Parts of the fortress were rebuilt with new prison sections. In 1909 the prison was closed and in 1937 it became a museum. Malmøhus currently houses Malmö Art Museum and Malmö Museum.
