On the north side of Myrtle Street, at the south border of Pufferbelly Park, beside the sidewalk, and beneath the shade of a mature, multi-stemmed Crape Myrtle tree you'll find a Little Free Pantry that serves "The Center of the Universe", Ashland, Virginia.
The square box with a shed roof is mounted to a wood post upon which "Little Free Pantry" is hand lettered down the southeast face. An unframed sheet of plexiglass acts as a door with a pair of brass hinges to the left, and a bright metal finish cabinet handle and two magnetic catches to the right. Somebody with artistic talents fully decorated the outside with vibrant original paintings:
Verdant and floral, the right side's message -- surrounded by a bright green frame and dainty flowers -- reads:
Please fill this
Little Free Pantry
with only:
• non-perishable food items
• personal care items
• paper goods
• school supplies
Midnight blue and galaxy of shining white stars, the left side features an undulating ribbon with a "feeding COTU - Ashland, VA" message in the center.
On the bright yellow back side, a set of five hands reach up from the bottom edge. Each holds a single red heart in its open palm.
The shelves were full on the day of my visit with bags of quinoa, boxes of macaroni and cheese, cans of black beans, garbanzo beans, and Campbell's tomato soup.
