Docteur Jean-Baptiste Meilleur
As the first superintendent of education in Lower Canada from 1842 to 1855, Jean-Baptiste Meilleur laid the foundation of a comprehensive public school system financed for the first time through the imposition of a special tax. He also created the pivotal position of school inspector. In addition to being a physician, an educator, author of the first Canadian chemistry textbook and a member of the House of Assembly, he was instrumental in the founding of the Collège de l'Assomption in 1832. His passionate commitment to public schools made him a pioneer in the history of Canadian education.
