The Holyoke Library Corporation was established in 1870 to create a library for Holyoke. In 1876 the library was housed in City Hall and the had a $1 per year membership fee. The fee was dropped in 1886 and it became a public library. In 1897 architect James A. Clough designed the present neo-Classical style building with an entrance on 335 Maple Street. Frank Dibble is chosen as builder. William Whiting, William Skinner, and J. P. Morgan donated $10,000 each to the building fund. The building was built in 1890 and the library moved into its new building in 1902.

In 2008, the library received a grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners to renovate the library. Holyoke then issued a $5.5 million dollar bond to complete the necessary funding. In 2011 reconstruction began and on October 28, 2013 a new modern style entrance to the library was opened on the back of the older section of the building on 250 Chestnut Street.
