Sir George-Étienne Cartier

Cet avocat de Montréal fut un des principaux architectes de la Confédération canadienne. Élu à l’Assemblée législative de la Province du Canada en 1848, il promut les droits des Canadiens français, réforma l’instruction publique et le système juridique du Canada-Est (Québec), et stimula l’expansion ferroviaire. Membre influent du Parti bleu, il dirigea plus tard le gouvernement avec sir John A. Macdonald, puis joua un rôle clé lors des conférences qui conduisirent à la Confédération, menant le Canada-Est dans l’union fédérale en 1867. Un ministre important du premier Parlement du Canada, Cartier favorisa la construction du chemin de fer du Canadien Pacifique et la création des provinces du Manitoba et de la Colombie-Britannique.

This Montréal lawyer was one of the principal architects of Canadian Confederation. Elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1848, he promoted the rights of French Canadians, reformed the legal and public education systems in Canada East (Quebec), and encouraged railway expansion. A leading member of the Parti Bleu, Cartier later headed the government with Sir John A. Macdonald, and played a key role during the conferences that led to Confederation, bringing Canada East into the federal union in 1867. A minister of influence in the first Parliament of Canada, Cartier contributed to the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and to the creation of the provinces of Manitoba and British Columbia.
