The Hartford Union Station occupies an entire city block north of Bushnell Park. The station was designed by architect George Keller in the Romanesque Revival style and constructed in 1889 of rough faced brownstone that was quarried in nearby Portland, CT. The symmetrically designed Union Station has a three story high central block flanked by two story high wings. A fire in 1914 required the replacement of the original gable roof with a flat steel roof and rebuilding of the interior.
The central block has a flat roof and is nine bays wide with a set of steps leading up to a four door entrance located at the fifth bay. which is sheltered by a lighted canopy. Each bay has a two story high window consisting of a double rectangular window below a semicircular window that spans the lower windows. The windows are framed by brownstone blocks. The upper level has one story high windows with a 2 by 2 set of windows below a semicircular window that spans the lower windows.
The flanking wings have steep gable roofs covered with red tile. They are about 135' long and serve as the waiting areas for the trains. Three equally spaced dormers have double rectangular windows. Each wing has two rows of deep set rectangular windows. The gable ends have three triple sets of windows. At each gable end are round towers with conical roofs. Elevated tracks extend beyond the ends of the wings.
Union Station services the AMTRAK Hartford Line which extends from New Haven, CT on the south to Springfield, MA to the north, both cities have continuing AMTRAK service.
