Les Sages-femmes-de-la-Nouvelle-France

The Midwives of New France

Supported by the government in hopes of reducing childbirth mortality and promoting population growth, some one hundred midwives formed a network that, before the Conquest, reached most settled parts of the colony. Midwives either certified by the Church, approved by the government, or in some cases widows in need of income, formed a system led by those trained in Paris, at the time a leading centre for obstetrics. By passing on their knowledge from generation to generation, these pioneers contributed to the development of an obstetric model unique in Canadian history.
