The “royal” monument of Montpellier
Posted at the end of one of the most sumptuous avenues in Montpellier, the Arc de Triomphe culminates the city at its highest point, at an altitude of 52 meters. Avenue Foch will take you there, filled with Haussmann-style buildings, in a very bourgeois atmosphere, as well as chic shops. Avenue also characterized by its terraces of greenery and flowers, all in a straight line, which will offer you a very nice perspective with the Arc de Triomphe in the background.

Built as part of the major national city beautification campaign in 1691, this Arc was completed in just one year. This large public project is the work of Charles-Augustin Daviler, then architect of the Province of Languedoc. François II d´Orbay, a pupil of Mansart, is the author of the drawings which form the basis of this building and we owe the sculptures to Philippe Bertrand. The purpose of this construction was to set up the entrance to the Promenade du Peyrou, the "royal square", dedicated to the glory of Louis XIV, the "benefactor" of the city. It was in 1688 that construction work on the Peyrou walk began. The statue of Louis XIV, which faces the Arc de Triomphe, was put in place late, in exactly 1718, and in 1784 the Promenade du Peyrou was finalized. The Arc de Triomphe is in part similar to that of Saint-Martin, or even Saint-Denis, which are in Paris. This construction cost the city 11,850 pounds at the time. Regarding the materials, more than 120m2 of stones had to be extracted from the quarries of the scrubland around Montpellier, stones which were subsequently intelligently arranged according to their attributes. Overall, these are shell limestones, or Tertiary sediments.

Posté au bout d’une des plus somptueuses avenues de Montpellier, l’Arc de Triomphe culmine la ville en son point le plus élevé, soit à une altitude de 52 mètres. C’est l’avenue Foch qui vous mènera jusqu’à lui, emplie d’immeubles de style haussmannien, dans une atmosphère très bourgeoise, ainsi que de magasins chics. Avenue caractérisée également par ses terre-pleins de verdure et de fleurs, toute en ligne droite, qui vous offrira une très jolie perspective avec l’Arc de Triomphe en fond.

Construit dans le cadre de la grande campagne nationale de travaux d’embellissement des villes en 1691, cet Arc fut achevé en un an seulement. Ce grand projet public est l’œuvre de Charles-Augustin Daviler, alors architecte de la Province du Languedoc. François II d’Orbay, élève de Mansart, est l’auteur des dessins qui sont à la base de cet édifice et on doit les sculptures à Philippe Bertrand. C’est en 1688 que débutèrent les travaux de construction de la balade du Peyrou. La statue de Louis XIV, qui fait face à l’Arc de Triomphe, a été tardivement mise en place, en 1718 exactement, et, en 1784, la Promenade du Peyrou est finalisée. L’Arc de Triomphe est en partie analogue à celui de Saint-Martin, ou encore Saint-Denis, qui se trouvent à Paris. Cette édification coûta à la ville 11,850 livres à l’époque. En ce qui concerne les matériaux, plus de 120m2 de pierres ont dû être extraites des carrières des garrigues des environs de Montpellier, pierres qui ont été par la suite intelligemment disposées selon leurs attributs. Dans l’ensemble ce sont des calcaires coquilliers, soit des sédiments tertiaires.
