Yankton was the First Territorial Capitol 1861-1883 and remained so, capitol, "mother City," steamboat town, and railhead until 1883. The Dakota Territory was originally one-fourth larger than Texas, extending North to Canada and West to the summit of the Rockies. Political chicanery resulted in the removal of the "capitol" to Bismarck, North Dakota, leaving Yankton with a historic marker and a bitter memory.
