Saint Florent
Located between the Corsican Cape and the Agriates desert. Saint Florent (or San Fiurenzu for the Corsicans) is an ancient Genoese city founded in the 16th century, which has become a very pleasant seaside resort welcoming a large number of tourists every year.
Close to Patrimonio (a town known for its high quality wines and its festival of the "Nights of the guitar") and the beach of Saleccia (a magnificent beach difficult to access), Saint Florent is a very beautiful place to spend your vacations in the best conditions.
Also known for its marina, the small Corsican city welcomes every year dozens of luxury boats. Visitors can't help but stroll around this small port, just to dream a little.
History of Saint Florent
Citadel of Saint FlorentAs we said before, this small town in the north of Corsica was founded by the Genoese in the 16th century. They built the citadel over Saint Florent to resist the assaults (Aragonese, French and Ottomans). The Corsican city was reconquered by the army of Pascal Paoli, helped by the fleet of Nelson. So we have seen at that time, an Anglo-Corsican cohabitation.
About 4 centuries later, during the Second World War, Corsica was the first French department to be liberated. The city of Saint Florent is for something, indeed in 1943, a company of Moroccan tabors landed in the Gulf of Saint Florent and fought (sometimes hand to hand) to reconquer Saint Florent, and in the same way the pass leading to Bastia.
Today, it is still possible to observe at the top of the pass of Téghime, a cannon dating from this war next to the monument to Moroccan soldiers. But it is also possible to visit in Bastia, the Muslim cemetery of the Maghrebian fighters of the second war.
