A mediados do século XVI a fonte da cidade non era axeitada para abastecer á poboación adecuadamente. Tratábase dunha fonte feita a xeito de balsa. A nova construción foi asumida polo bispo Diego de Soto rematándose a mesma en 1548, tal e como indica a inscrición fundacional. Esta fixose en cantería máis abaixo ca a anterior e, na súa orixe, contaba con catro canos. Na parte máis alta da construción, atópase o Escudo Imperial de Carlos le, a ámbolos dous lados, na parte baixa, dous do bispo que ordenou as obras.
A Fonte Vella ten dúas partes ben diferenciadas: o edificio exterior e a zona da captación da auga no interior da construción. Detrás da monumentalidade renacentista deste edificio do século XVI áchase a bóveda que cubre o xurdimento de auga. Temos un espazo, baixo estas cubertas de lousa, no que se canaliza a auga que deu orixe a esta fonte. Hogano, o devandito espazo está acon- dicionado cun chan de cuarcitas colocadas en cuñas para facilitar o acceso e, así, poder contemplar desde ali a bóveda de canón que o cubre sen mollar os pés como sucedía antano. Nas paredes, contemplamos un espazo museistico, dedicado a explicación das traidas de auga de Mondoñedo dende o século XVIII ata o século XXI, que permite ver e aprender como se accedia ao liquido elemento, a auga, esencial para vida de calquera poboación. Podemos acceder a este singular lugar a traves da porta que temos aqui ao carón."


translate: Old fountain In the mid-16th century the city's fountain was not adequate to supply the population adequately. It was a fountain made in the shape of a raft. The new construction was taken over by Bishop Diego de Soto and completed in 1548, as indicated by the founding inscription. This one was made in stonework lower than the previous one and, in its origin, it had four pipes. In the highest part of the construction, is the Imperial Shield of Carlos reads, to both sides, in the low part, two of the bishop who ordered works. The Fonte Vella has two well-differentiated parts: the exterior building and the water catchment area inside the building. Behind the Renaissance monumentality of this 16th century building is the vault that covers the source of water. We have a space, under these slate roofs, in which the water that gave rise to this fountain is channeled. Hogan, this space is equipped with a floor of quartzites placed in wedges to facilitate access and, thus, to be able to contemplate from there the barrel vault that covers it without wetting the feet as it used to be. On the walls, we see a museum space, dedicated to explaining the water supply of Mondoñedo from the eighteenth century to the twenty-first century, which allows you to see and learn how to access the liquid element, water, essential for the life of any population.
