This 4 metre tall sculpture of a person fishing is sitting on the top a former railway bridge and was erected as part of an art project for the Millennium celebrations.

The railway line that originally crossed the River Ouse was part of the East Coast Mainline. Due to fears of subsidence this section of the railway was diverted and the line converted to a 'rails to trails' route for cyclists and walkers.
In 1999 3 people from York University constructed a 6.4 mile long scale model of the solar system along the trail as part of the Millennium celebrations. These people were also 'friends of Naburn Bridge', that carried the railway over the River Ouse.
They applied for further funding from Millennium funds set up for art projects for which they were successful. The local population were asked to provide input to choose a design for the artwork and eventually this one was chosen.

The Fisher of Dreams
The Fisher of Dreams sculpture on this bridge was created by
local artist Pete Rogers. Funding for this project came from the
City of York's 'Creative Communities 2000' scheme, a
Millennium project to fund community art, administered on the
Council's behalf by Rural Arts. Additional funding for the
sculpture came from the cycle track owners, 'Sustrans'.
Installation of the sculpture was possible by the generosity
of William Birch & Sons.
In this project Pete Rogers worked with local people to design a
sculpture for the bridge. To involve the community in this
project, Pete Rogers held an Open Day on the bridge in October
2000. This generated many drawings, models and descriptions of
possible sculptures that could enhance the bridge. From these
contributions, Pete Rogers made models of three possible
sculptures. One depicted the Flying Scotsman, one a group of
people who now use the bridge and the third model depicted the
'Fisher of Dreams'. In January 2001 the models were displayed
in local schools, Naburn post office, Bishopthorpe library,
Tesco's in Dringhouses and on the bridge itself. As a result of
these exhibitions a total of more than 800 people voted for their
favourite design and the clear winner, with more than 50% of the
votes, was the 'Fisher of Dreams.'
The tranquil Fisher, deliberately neither male nor female, dreams
his (or her) dreams by the river bank, of a time when the 'Flying
Scotsman' still steamed over this bridge. Everything seems
idyllic - but always remember, it's just when all seems right with
the world, that's there's a dog behind you, peeing on your bike!
