The 12-foot obelisk headstone for Jane and Thomas Quark is to be found in the churchyard of All Saints Church in Lonan.

At the base of the column on the front face, looking over the grave, the memorial tablet has the following dedication:

“IN

JANE
WIFE OF THOMAS QUARK
WHO DIED 29TH MAY 1886
AGED 47 YEARS
AT REST”

On the face to the right the memorial tablet has the following dedication:

“IN
LOVING MEMORY OF
THOMAS QUARK
WHO DIED FEB 14TH 1905

Jane Quark (nee Moore) and Thomas Quark
Jane Quark (nee Moore) was baptised on 29th December 1839 at Lonan. Her parents were James and Jane Moore (nee Kneal).

From the national census records Jane would seem to have lived at Ballaquark in the Parish of Lonan with her parents until the time of her wedding to Thomas on the 6th day of August 1863 at Lonan.

I have not been able to locate a definitive documentary record for the birth or baptism of Thomas, but he would appear to have been born in 1838/39 based on information shown on later National Census records. It is thought that his parents were, William John and Ann Quark (nee Cowin).

The only National Census records which I have found where Jane and Thomas are both report is from 1881. At the date of this census the couple were living at 66/68 Watson Street, Birkenhead, Cheshire. Thomas is record as being a “Draper Master”. The record also reports that living at the same address as the Jane and Thomas and two assistants and a domestic servant.
