Marker Name: Showtime at the Spouting Horn
Marker Text: Setting the Stage . . .
Below you is an “ocean geyser” -- a playful coastal anomaly known as the Spouting Horn. How did it get there? Over time, pounding waves gradually widened a fracture in the rocks forming Cook’s Chasm. The edge of the chasm was undercut, creating a cave. Finally, a hole or crack formed in the roof of the cave, setting the stage for the Spouting Horn.
Action!
The Spouting Horn puts on its most dramatic shows during high tides and storms. Incoming waves funnel air and water into the cave, building pressure until the water explodes in a geyser-like spray. The sight and sound of the Spouting Horn resembles a whale exhaling, which is called a “blow” or . . . you guessed it . . . a “spout!”
