The marker says, "When it is time to take a break from the rapid pulse of the city, Shelter Island provides a relaxing, laid-back feeling on San Diego Bay. The Port of San Diego now manages this land, which has been an area for relaxation and recreation for decades.

Behind you is the Yokohama Friendship Bell. San Diego's sister city of Yokohama, Japan presented the bell to the city in 1958. Directly in front of you is the entrance to the Bay where on September 28, 1542, Juan Cabrillo's fleet, San Salvador and La Victoria, sailed into San Diego Bay. Today naval vessels, cargo and cruise ships can be seen sailing into the Bay from the same area Cabrillo did many of years ago.

The area across the water and off to your right is Point Loma, and directly across is Naval Air Station North Island. Today, Shelter Island is a popular area for locals and tourists. There are several great restaurants, hotels, a fishing pier and playground. An extensive promenade, with picnic tables, benches, and a terrific view begins here and continues south.

Enjoy the atmosphere and your visit to San Diego Bay! You'll find other informational maps just like this one as you navigate the Port of San Diego tidelands."

The Big Bay side says, "Welcome to San Diego Bay - 34 of the most important waterfront miles in the San Diego region. This vital stretch of coastline, from Point Loma to Imperial Beach, has played host to important events in the region's history, from the founding of San Diego to the birth of naval aviation.

The ways to enjoy your visit to San Diego Bay are diverse as the shoreline itself. Along the Bay's shores lie some of the most beautiful marinas, hotels, restaurants, ship and attractions in the nation. Enjoy miles of waterfront paths and parks. View rare and endangered species of plants and wildlife in the surrounding wetlands and reserves.

The State of California and local voters entrusted the Port of San Diego in 1962 to protect and manage this precious resource. The Port, representing five cites around the Bay, has maintained and improved the area's resources ever since. Pleas join with us in preserving San Diego Bay for all."
