Consisting of an archipelago of islets off the coast of Cap Corse, the Finocchiarola islands take their name from the Corsican finochju, fennel. These rocky coasts are part of the wild landscape which forges the unique character of the whole of the Cap Corse.

Finocchiarola Tower

The Tower of FINOCCHIAROLA is located on the most offshore islet of the archipelago of the same name, north-east of the port of MACINAGHJU, which comprises 3 islets: Terrana, Mezzana and Finocchiarola. The tower is not accessible, the islet being the property of the Conservatoire du littoral. All landings are forbidden to protect the species of seabirds that come to nest there, including the crested cormorant and Audouin's gull. All boat anchoring

This tower, which is exposed to strong winds and sea spray, is in a very poor state of repair. It is circular in shape, probably on a single level and topped by a terrace. Its north-east side has partly collapsed. One can barely make out the crown and the machicolations.

The Towers
From the 14th to the 18th century, the towers were built at a time when barbarian invasions were numerous.
Most of them were built on the coast, and some in the villages.
There are a hundred of them all over Corsica, a quarter of which are in the Cap Corse and ten in Rogliano.
There are two kinds of towers: the round ones, which belonged to the community, were more difficult to build because they were more solid and high (12 to 17 m) and ensured the surveillance and defence of the sea and the coast.
The square towers, often built inland, with the exception of the tower on the island of Giraglia, were the property of their owners and served as a refuge for the population.
