"Sardines were fished at night, arid boats unloaded catches in the early morning hours. In the 1930s, 18 canneries lined the Monterey waterfront. When the boats arrived, whistles blew all along Cannery Row to alert workers. Phones rang, too, and all that was said was "Fish."

Each cannery's whistle had a unique sound and, depending on the number of workers needed, blew different signals. When the workers heard the whistles, they would wake up or drop whatever they were doing and head down the hill to their jobs. The boilermen were called first, followed by the women working the canning lines, and then all the others. Everyone worked long days with little rest until all the fish were canned. Today at noon; you'll hear whistles— a reminder of Monterey's heyday as the "Sardine Capital of the World.""
