L'institut ouvre officiellement ses portes en 1873 sous le nom d'Hospice (Asile) Saint-Jean-de-Dieu. Il était géré par les Sœurs de la Providence. L'hospice était dédié aux soins des patients atteints de maladie mentale. En 1890, lors de l'un des pires incendies de Montréal, les bâtiments ont été presque entièrement détruits et environ 100 personnes sont mortes.

L'asile fut bientôt reconstruit en pierre. Un ajout important, le pavillon principal est inauguré en 1928. L'Hospice prend le nom de l'hôpital Saint-Jean-de-Dieu dans les années 1920 et change de nom pour Hôpital Louis-H. Lafontaine en 1976. Il a été rebaptisé en 2013 comme l'Institut Universitaire en Santé Mentale de Montréal et a depuis fusionné avec plusieurs autres institutions comme Centre Intégré Universitaire de Santé et de Services Sociaux de l'Est-de-l'Île-de -Montréal".

This Christian cross is located near the main building of l'Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal in Montreal, Quebec.

The institute officially opened its doors in 1873 under the name of Hospice (Asylum) Saint-Jean-de-Dieu. It was managed by the Sisters of Providence. The hospice was dedicated to the care of patients with mental illness. In 1890, in one of Montreal's worst fires, buildings were almost completely destroyed and about 100 people died.

The asylum was soon rebuilt in stone. An important addition, the main pavilion was inaugurated in 1928. The Hospice took the name “Hôpital” in the 1920s and changed its name to Hôpital Louis-H. Lafontaine in 1976. It was renamed in 2013 as the Institut Universitaire en Santé Mentale de Montréal and has since merged with several other institutions as the Center Intégré Universitaire de Santé et de Services sociaux de l'Est-de-l'Île-de-Montreal.
