This ceramic diamond memorial for Pettt Officer 2nd Ckass Philip Oswald Caine R.N. can be found in St. Mary de Ballaugh (New Church) on Station Road in Ballaugh.

This ceramic diamond memorial is to the right of the third window from the front of the nave on the south side of the church. It has a decorated border on all four edges and a red Christian cross at the apex and a red anchor at the base. The dedication on the memorial is shown below:

“In Memory of
Philip O. Caine
Late Petty Officer 2nd Class R.N.
and Leading Torpedo man
H.M.S. “Juno.”
Died the 31st May 1904 in his 22nd year.

"The Lord hath need
of him.""

Philip O Caine (1882 – 1904)
The 1891 national census shows Philip (9) living with his parents William (39) and Mary (38) at Dollagh in Ballaugh. He is the second eldest of five children at the address and is described as a “Scholar”. His father was recorded as an “Agricultural Labourer”. The eldest child is Ada Corlett (14) who is recorded as William and Mary’s stepdaughter. Ada was a “Farm Labourer”.

Philip’s service record shows’ that his first ship after joining the Royal Navy was H.M.S Impregnable which he joined on the 17th day of February 1901. He served on a number of ships before joining H.M.S. Juno on the 25th day of January 1904.

It would appear that his service was cut short either due to illness or an accident as he was discharged on the 7th day of April 1904 when he was described as “Invalider”
