The Ontonagon is a river system in northern Michigan which flows into Lake Superior near the small town of Ontonagon. It consists of two main branches named the East Branch and the West Branch, each of which has a major tributary named the Middle Branch and the South Branch respectively. Furthermore, the South Branch is called the Cisco Branch above its confluence with the Tenmile Creek. Portions of the East Branch and West Branch and all of the Cisco Branch and Middle Branch have been designated as “wild and scenic” to protect their free-flowing status for recreational purposes.

In 2019, the Ontonagon River was one of twelve rivers featured on a set of postage stamps commemorating the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The actual scene depicted on this stamp is in the area of Kakabika Falls on the Cisco Branch. These falls are a series of small cascades which are easily accessible via a short hike off County Route 527. The stamp appears to show the river in early spring because there’s substantially more water flowing than in my photo which was taken in the middle of summer.
