Monserato chapel in Bastia visited by thugs
The sacristan Pascal Costa has noticed some damage in the place of worship in Monserato. The trunk of the candles was torn off, the pews were turned over, the relic holders in the sacristy were all knocked over. Nothing was stolen The chapel of Scala Santa has been a place of pilgrimage for many Bastians for several centuries. Today, fewer people flock to this place of worship, which houses one of the world's rare reproductions of the holy stairs that Jesus climbed before being tortured in Pontius Pilate's prisons.
A chapel opened every day by Pascal Costa who offered to take care of the place with Canon Francis Ghisoni, parish priest of Sainte Marie. And on Sunday at around 7.30 pm, when he entered the religious building, his blood ran cold.
He still recounts with emotion yesterday morning: "The trunk that collects the donations of the faithful had been torn from the wall. The candles had been knocked over and several of them were about to burst into flames and burn down the church. The pews had been turned over. In the small sacristy, the relic holders were all knocked over. Fortunately nothing was stolen. I went round the whole chapel. "
