Les petits baigneurs est une sculpture de bronze représentant une scène contemporaine de baignade. Un personnage assis tente d’arroser le personnage debout qui, lui, ne semble pas prendre plaisir au jeu. La composition asymétrique, à demi-sortie de sa niche formée d’une coquille et de deux colonnes cannelées, relève d’un grand dynamisme.

Réalisée au moment où Laliberté gagne une reconnaissance pour ses sculptures commémoratives, la fontaine reflète néanmoins l’intérêt qu’il porte au folklore québécois. En fait, le thème reflète la fonction du lieu, mais déplace l’activité de la baignade urbaine dans un contexte rural.

On trouve un déplacement similaire dans l’œuvre La fermière installée à quelques pas des Petits baigneurs devant le marché Maisonneuve, l’année précédente. Les groupes statuaires secondaires de cette autre fontaine réalisée par Laliberté représentent trois jeunes garçons à l’expression plutôt rigide apportant des animaux au marché. Ainsi, les deux œuvres se font écho dans le passage de la ruralité vers l’urbanité.

Les petits baigneurs (The little bathers) is a bronze sculpture portraying a contemporary bathing scene. A sitting person is splashing a standing person, who doesn’t seem to be enjoying the game. The asymmetrical composition, part of which projects beyond the niche formed of a shell and two fluted columns, creates a sense of dynamism.

Produced at a time when Laliberté was gaining recognition for his commemorative sculptures, the fountain reflects his interest in Québec folklore. In fact, the theme reflects the function of the site, but displaces the activity that took place at a city baths to a rural context.

There is a similar displacement in Laliberté’s La fermière, an artwork that had been installed a few steps away from Les petits baigneurs, in front of the Maisonneuve market, the previous year. The secondary statuary groups in this other fountain represent three boys, expressed rather stiffly, taking animals to the market. Thus, both works give a sense of the transition from rural to urban life.
