Former Providence Row Night Refuge - Spitalfields, London, UK - Gender Separated Entrances on Waymarking.com

The Roman Catholic Convent of Mercy and the attached Providence Row Night Refuge was founded as a charity in 1860 by the Rev. Daniel Gilbert. Their rather austere-looking premises opened here in 1868 on the site of a former Jewish-community fairground. The refuge provided accommodation for 300 women and children and 50 men. Men and women were accommodated in separate wings of the building and had segregated entrances. Both former entrances can still be seen with prominent signage ‘MEN’ and ‘WOMEN’ above the doors. Most accommodation was provided on a single night basis, although there was a dormitory on the top floor for longer term residents who were training to enter domestic service.

The building today houses student accommodation and is substantially modernised inside, behind the 1868 frontage. Only one of the former gender specific doorways is still used as an entrance.
