Sacred Heart was established by Father Isidore Robot as a Catholic mission on the old Pottawatomie reserve. The community revolved around the Sacred Heart Mission, which became an important center of Catholicism in the region. Devastated by a fire in 1901, many of its functions moved to other locations. High school and college education for boys moved in 1915 to Shawnee to the facility that eventually became St. Gregory's University. The Post Office was closed in 1954 and the community is now considered a ghost town. The Sacred Heart Church, constructed in 1914, and the adjoining cemetery are the only remnants of the community.
