The pub is in the Clementhorpe area of York and the road slopes down to the River Ouse. In the 18th Century this area of York was a busy area with shipyards and wharves on the River.
The location of the pub ties in with the name, and it's possible that ships were launched from the bottom of the road onto the river. However the pub sign shows a large liner, that could not possibly have been launched on this river.
In later years the industry declined and the area is now largely residential.
