Joe Green Hall is a 500 bed residence hall with dual occupancy rooms, primarily for freshmen, organized into pod communities of nine or ten rooms with centralized social and restroom spaces. Self Guided Tour document provided by the university notes some key elements in the building's LEED design:
- Sustainable Sites: A significant amount of asphalt was removed from the site prior to the building's construction, cutting back on heat emissions that allow for improved energy efficiency. As with most universities, Joe Greene Hall is within walking distance of many key services, reducing the need for motorized transportation.
- Water Efficiency: Efficient irrigation controls are used for the vegetation outside the building, and inside fixtures use less water than in other residence halls here on campus.
- Energy and Atmosphere: Joe Greene Hall's HVAC systems use environmentally-friendly refrigerants, and its power provider utilizes green options such as solar, wind, and geothermal. LED lighting is used throughout the building.
- Materials and Resources: The building's design takes into consideration the removal and disposal of building materials as it affects the environment, and recycled materials were used in its construction. Recycling is encouraged at multiple locations inside.
- Indoor Environmental Quality: Materials used inside Joe Greene Hall were selected so as to minimize impact and/or hazard to residents. Large windows are noted as a key component of the building's design not only to provide light but also views for the sake of physical and mental wellness.
