As well as the traditional pub sign there is also a sculpture of a dying man above the entrance.

The sign shows the gladiator from behind, he is on his knees with his arms outstretched to the crowd.

The sculpture above the entrance was carved in 1837 by William Clark based on a famous statue from Roman times from around 230 AD. The original statue was dedicated to a dying soldier, sitting on his shield with his sword by his side. This statue became famous in Victorian times and numerous copies made. Although the true name of the statue was the Dying Gaul, it became known as the dying gladiator and it was this name that was chosen for the pub.

For some reason the original statue depicted the dying man in the nude and the sculpture does the same and on his chest there is a red mark depicting the wound from which he is dying.
