Vasco da Gama Square in Hamburg's Hafencity district.
Vasco da Gama Square is the smallest of the three public squares in Hafen-City. In contrast to the terraces, it is primarily used for recreation by the residents of Dalmannkai. This is also reflected in the design.
Outdoor sports
The colourfully contrasted playing area, a basketball court, is equipped with a noise barrier and surrounded by a steel pergola and trees. Access to the Dallmannkai promenade and thus to the water is via an open staircase with seating steps or a ramp suitable for the disabled. There is also ample space for outdoor catering.
Places in the interplay of land, water and the tides
During the development of Hafen-City, great importance was also attached to the quality of the open space design. The competition for the design of the open spaces was won by the architectural firm EBMT Arquitectes Associates from Barcelona, who skilfully used the interplay of land, water and the tides as a design element and created a design coherence of the open spaces in HafenCity.
