Before Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, there was Ernie Nevers who played both professional football and professional baseball. In addition, as a collegiate athlete, he excelled in basketball and various track and field events. Chosen by Sports Illustrated magazine as the best college athlete of all time in 1962, Nevers was an inaugural member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Ernie Nevers was born in Minnesota but grew up in Wisconsin. While still in high school, Nevers’ family moved to the San Francisco Bay area where he completed high school and attended Stanford University. A star of Stanford’s football team, Nevers went on to play professionally, mostly for the St. Louis Browns, the Duluth Eskimos and the Chicago Cardinals. Ernie Nevers also pitched for the St. Louis Browns baseball team for three seasons.

In 2003, Ernie Nevers was honored on a U.S. postage stamp. Many sports heroes have appeared on postage stamps over the years, some of whom were contemporaries of Nevers. So how did Ernie Nevers stack up against these athletes? In the 1925 Rose Bowl game, Ernie Nevers’ Stanford team, coached by “Pop” Warner, faced Notre Dame’s “Four Horseman” coached by Knute Rockne. Though Stanford lost, Nevers racked up 114 yards, almost as many as the four horsemen combined. While playing for the Chicago Cardinals in 1929, Nevers scored 40 points against Red Grange and the Chicago Bears, a record that still stands to this day. On the baseball side, Ernie Nevers didn’t fare as well, giving up two of Babe Ruth’s 60 homeruns in 1927.

It’s customary, when talking about a football player, to give his position. Ernie Nevers’ position is listed as fullback, but he also played quarterback and defensive back as well as being the team’s kicker and punter.
