Clara Barton
A humanitarian, teacher, nurse, and author, Barton recognized the needs of many. While teaching at a private school she saw the need for public education. Despite opposition, she established one of the first free public schools in the state of New Jersey at Bordentown, 1852-1854.
During the American Civil War, Barton became distressed at the lack of supplies and "comforts" for the wounded. Without official organization or affiliation, she began to minister to casualties on the battle sites in Virginia, soon becoming known as the "Angel of the Battlefield".
Barton volunteered her services during the Franco-Prussian War. Here she became involved with the International Red Cross. The American group she formed was incorporated as the American Association of the Red Cross in 1881. She remained as President of the organization until 1904. Under Clara's leadership, the organization started the disaster relief program that it is known for today.
