" L’inauguration officielle du cimetière Saint Pierre est effectuée le 30 décembre 1863, par le préfet Maupas et le maire de Marseille François-Xavier Balthazar Rouvière.

Auparavant, outre les petits cimetières paroissiaux, conventuels ou hospitaliers, la ville enterrait ses défunts dans le grand cimetière de Saint-Charles. Trop vite saturé et trop proche du centre-ville, on décida la construction d’un nouveau cimetière plus grand et plus excentré, le cimetière de Saint-Pierre. Ce lieu de recueillement est l’un des plus riches de la ville au niveau architectural et patrimonial et l’un des plus grands cimetières de France avec 63 ha.

Il abrite de nombreuses tombes remarquables : tombeaux monumentaux, statues, décors sculptés, caryatides, anges, pleureuses et curiosités en tous genres.

Parmi les monuments, le tombeau de la famille Lains est de loin le plus célèbre du cimetière. Œuvre du sculpteur Buselli, il représente la disparue sur son lit de mort embrassée par son époux et une statue représentant l'âme accueillie au paradis, du sculpteur Henri Reybaud. L'on peut également découvrir de très nombreuses oeuvres des sculpteurs André Allar, Auguste Carli, Louis Bottinelly, et Antoine Sartorio ou d'architecte comme Pascal Xavier Coste.

Dans le cimetière Saint-Pierre reposent quelques célébrités comme les peintres Adolphe Monticelli et Alphonse Moutte, le poète Emile Sicard, le poète comédien Antonin Artaud, le poète écrivain Edmond Rostand, le compositeur et interprète Vincent Scotto et son gendre Allibert… ou encore les parents de Fernandel ou le frère d’Edouard Balladur. Marcel Pagnol, repose dans le petit cimetière de la Treille, îlot de verdure au cœur de la ville.

Le cimetière abrite également la "Cathédrale du Silence", édifice de huit étages en béton permettant l'inhumation de près de 190 000 personnes, un crématorium construit par l’architecte Léonce Muller en s’inspirant des mosquées ayant été agrandi récemment, dans une architecture plus actuelle, considérant l'augmentation du nombre des crémations, et une crypte style art déco suivant les plans de l'architecte Gaston Castel consacrée aux soldats marseillais morts sur le champ d’honneur pendant la guerre de 1914-1918."

The cemetery also houses the "Cathedral of Silence", an eight-storey concrete building allowing the burial of nearly 190,000 people, a crematorium built by the architect Léonce Muller taking inspiration from the mosques that were recently enlarged, in a more current architecture, considering the increase in the number of cremations, and an art deco style crypt according to the plans of the architect Gaston Castel dedicated to the Marseilles soldiers who died on the field of honor during the war of 1914-1918."
