Alfred Lunt was born in 1892 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Always fascinated with the theater, he acted in school plays both in high school and college. Though interested in other pursuits, he slowly gravitated toward acting as a full-time career. He performed with various touring companies before ending up on Broadway in 1917. His first leading role occurred in 1919 in “Clarence.”

While on tour in Washington DC, Alfred Lunt met English actress Lynn Fontanne. The two married in 1922 and within a year were performing together in “Sweet Nell of Old Drury.” For the next four decades, they rarely performed separately. Their on-stage persona, mostly in light comedy, made them a major draw wherever they went.

The couple retired from the stage, more or less, in 1960 and spent their time at their summer home in Wisconsin. Alfred Lunt died in 1977 at the age of 84 and Lynn Fontanne followed in 1983 at the age of 95. They are interred together at Milwaukee’s Forest Home Cemetery. (Source: Wikipedia)
