Gregory Hines was born in New York City in 1946 and was dancing before the age of three. By the age of five, he was dancing professionally. Thus began a life-long career in the entertainment business. Throughout his youth, Gregory Hines performed as a tap dancer with his brother and father but by age 20, had decided to branch out, recording a jazz-rock album in 1973. By the late 70s, he was acting on Broadway and in the movies.

Hines’ Broadway performances include parts in “Comin' Uptown” (1980), “Sophisticated Ladies” (1981) and the role of Jelly Roll Morton in “Jelly's Last Jam” (1992). On the big screen, he appeared in “The Cotton Club,” “White Nights,” “Waiting to Exhale” among many others. He also had a varied and extensive television career. Throughout his life he never lost his enthusiasm for dance, lobbying successfully for a “National Tap Dance Day” in 1988.

Gregory Hines was married twice with two children. Both marriages ended in divorce. At the time of his death, he was engaged to Canadian bodybuilder Nagrita Jayde. Jayde passed away just a few years after Hines and they are interred together at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Cemetery in Oakville, ON. (Sources: NY Public Library, Britannica.)
