"In 1906 and 1922, the Parc Chanot housed the colonial exhibition of Marseille. The gate still at the entrance dates from this period. Before this conversion, the site was used by the army as a field of maneuvers. It housed a permanent amusement park, the American (Luna) Park which burned down in the early years and before the war of 1914.

Since 1907, the gardens have been open to the public and the Park hosts the Marseille International Fair every year. The Chanot park has also hosted the regional station of France 3 Méditerranée since 1954.

Parc Chanot is also home to the Marseille convention center.

Located a stone's throw from the Stade Vélodrome, Parc Chanot is used as a parking lot for supporters during the events that take place there, in particular the matches of the Olympique de Marseille.

Avant cette reconversion, le site était utilisé par l'armée comme champ de manœuvres. Le parc s'organise autour d'une pyramide vitrée de 4 mètres qui est en fait le puits de lumière de la station de métro située en dessous. Outre deux aires de jeux pour enfants, le jardin comporte également un manège, un circuit de voitures électriques, un point de location de cycles et un théâtre de marionnettes. Au bord du bassin, une buvette-restaurant permet d'effectuer une halte apaisante. Remodelé en 1995, ce jardin a été doté d'une piste d'éducation routière bordée de 9 grands pins parasols et de plus de 1000 arbustes (lauriers-roses, lauriers-sauce, spirées, seringas, viburnum, escallonias...)."
