The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), M998 or Humvee is part of a family of light four-wheel drive military utility vehicles made by AM General since 1983. It is a light, agile and versatile vehicle that can be configured in a multitude of ways. Currently it is being replaced by the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) as the need for armored vehicles and the Humvee is not designed for the amount of armor it has been carrying for years in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

About this Humvee:
In July 1981, the Army began Program XM998, a request for the development of a light, tactical four-wheel drive utility vehicle. AM General, Chrysler Defense, and Teledyne Continental companies were invited to submit prototypes. Testing began in April 1982, with AM General's design winning out. AM General based in South Bend, Indiana, traces its roots to Willys-Overland Motors Inc., which produced Jeeps during World War II. This M998 cargo/ troop carrier, serial number 001, is the first production HMMWV assembled in January 1985. It was assigned to the Fort Irwin National Training Area in California.
