Louis "Lew" Haines Wentz is interred in this mausoleum in Odd Fellows Cemetery. The windowless marble mausoleum is in a place of honor near the veterans memorial, with a brick walkway leading from the memorial to the crypt.
Description:
Louis Wentz, after a chance encounter with businessman John McCaskey, was eventually employed at the famous 101 Ranch in Indian Territory. He became interested in oil exploration and purchased leases throughout the territory. After McCaskey's death, Wentz was appointed trustee of the estate and, in a rather underhanded move, purchased the families oil leases without a competitive bid. This soon brought him an income of a million dollars a month, putting him in the same financial strata as John D. Rockefeller and J. P. Morgan. Later in life he disposed of much of his income through philanthropy, including a Boys and Girls Camp and a wildlife refuge, both in Ponca City, that still operate today. Wentz never married; his permanent residence was a suite at the Arcade Hotel in Ponca City. On his death, his $50 million estate went to four Oklahoma colleges.
