The plaque says, "On this spot, where the inspiring strains of the Star Spangled Banner are heard each morning, formerly stood the home of Judge Joseph Hopper Nicholson, brother-in-law of Francis Scott Key, to who Key gave the original manuscript and who set the words to a popular tune of the time. Here the manuscript remained until the Nicholson house was torn down in 1845."
