Armadillos are fairly common in Texas, generally found in the country but they'll make their way into smaller urban areas. While they're typically nocturnal, they'll occasionally be out and about in the morning or sometimes at dusk, and they tend to just turn and walk away from encounters. Unfortunately, most will see them as roadkill along the side of the road.

This sign provides a nice photo of an armadillo, noting the etymology of its name along with a physical description and some background as to their eating habits, their activities, their capabilities, and their lifespans. Their claw prints are depicted as well: Compare them with the faux footprints you see in the pavement, giving the illusion that the nearby sculpture left them.
