The village of Lehde is an open-air museum showing the life of the Sorbs from the past. Sorbs are a distinct population group in Germany with their own language and culture. For example, everywhere in the area you see street signs that are bilingual.
In the museum all kinds of objects such as traditional costumes, fishing equipment, agricultural tools, home furnishings and photos are displayed. You are walking, as it were, in a Sorbian village from the past.
Many vegetables are grown in this region, especially pickles.
The Gurkenmuseum (museum of pickles) is part of the open air museum.
Karl Heinz Starich is the owner. For years and years he collected everything that has to do with pickles and the collection can be seen here in Lehde.
Every year the Queen of pickles is choosen. She has her own recipee. That year these pickles are sold as the queen's pickles.
Very special as they have an own registered trademark.
