"A new jail project was established in 1839, in direct connection with the preparation for the abolition of slavery, and in 1851 it was realized by the construction of a new building instead of gendarmes' housing.

The situation of this jail owes nothing to chance. Limited on two sides by the high walls of the theater and the Boulevard, it also rubs the imposing infantry barracks Ursulines north.

As a place of pre-trial detention, this jail accommodates only prisoners sentenced to a maximum of one month's imprisonment.

The eruption of Mount Pelee on May 8, 1902, destroyed the jail heavily, leaving only the dungeon of Cyparis and the basins in its ruins.

The two buildings that constitute it are distributed along a central corridor oriented north-south. East of this corridor opens another smaller corridor which has two cells and which leads to a courtyard in which is a basin and the famous dungeon of Cyparis.

A row of four cells runs along the west side of the central corridor. Three of them open to the west on three courses each with a pool. Each cell has virtually access to a water point of its own."

" Un nouveau projet de prison est établi en 1839, en lien direct avec la préparation de l'abolition de l'esclavage. Il se concrétise en 1851 par la construction d'un nouvel édifice, à la place du logement de gendarmes.

La situation de cette prison ne doit rien au hasard. Limitée sur deux de ses côtés par les hautes murailles du théâtre et du Boulevard, elle côtoie en outre l'imposante caserne d'infanterie des Ursulines au nord.

En tant que lieu de détention provisoire, cette prison n'accueille que des prisonniers condamnés à des peines légères d'un mois de prison maximum.

L'éruption de la montagne Pelée du 8 mai 1902 détruit lourdement la prison, ne laissant subsister dans ses ruines que le cachot de Cyparis et des bassins.

Les deux bâtiments qui la constituent sont répartis le long d'un couloir central orienté nord-sud. À l'est de ce couloir s'ouvre un autre couloir plus petit qui comporte deux cellules et qui débouche sur une cour dans laquelle se trouve un bassin et le célèbre cachot de Cyparis.

Une rangée de quatre cellules longe le côté ouest du couloir central. Trois d'entre elles s'ouvrent à l'ouest sur trois cours disposant chacune d'un bassin. Chaque cellule a ainsi pratiquement accès à un point d'eau qui lui est propre. "
