The library's entry on the Little Free Library website provides some background:
ChristianScienceDenton.com's little library is across the street from TWU at 402 Texas Street. We opened up on Monday, March 31, 2020 in response to the Corona Virus shutdown. We hope it is a way to show our love for our neighbors to help them through this very tough time. We have included inspirational books and welcome all kinds of good books that our neighbors want to share. We even added a can of beans for anyone in need.
The library itself is nothing special, a cookie-cutter kit obtained from the Little Free Library people (note the medallion on the side), made of particle board, painted blue with a black roof, and standing on an unfinished wooden post. On their website (see URL, below), they noted in August of 2020 the library's expansion into a dual role:
The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Denton’s Free Little Library is a very active place. A few months ago we began to add can goods with a phone number to call for prayerful support to the free Little Library. The food is gone every week. A free little library user added some can goods on their own as well – a very kind gesture to help a neighbor in need.
At the time the gallery photos were taken, the upper shelf was devoted to books, but there was a bag of dry beans in front of the books. The lower shelf appears dedicated to the pantry role, primarily with heat-and-eat canned vegetables, but there were also some tomato products for those who need base ingredients.
