Mt. Gregory United Methodist Church History:

African-American life in Cooksville has always revolved around the church and the school. Church is very important to our community and it plays a major role in our lives. Our church, Mt. Gregory United Methodist, is one of the oldest churches in the county and has always been in Cooksville, MD.

Mt. Gregory was founded in 1870 in an old stone building known as the “Warfield Academy” In 1867, after the Civil War, Thomas Hood and his wife Sarah granted the building and one acre of land to George Snowden, and other trustees of the Cooksville Community. This property was granted for the sole purpose of being used as a school to educate the Black children of Cooksville, MD.

Shortly, thereafter, however, it became evident that the people also needed a place in which to worship God and received spiritual guidance. In recognition of this need, another clause was added to the deed, which specified the land was to be used for “school and church” purpose only. It was then agreed that the lower level of Warfield Academy would be used for worship services, and the upper level of the building would be used to teach academic courses. Mt. Gregory church was organized in the lower level and continued to function there until the existing church was built in 1898. Mt. Gregory is designated as a State Historic Site.

Our church and school worked together for many, many years. When Cooksville School existed, Mt. Gregory was the site used for all of their graduation exercises. This tradition can be traced as far back as the 1920’s.
