In September 1802, seventy persons signed a petition to establish a Protestant Episcopal church in East Windsor. St. John's Church was designed by Samuel Belcher and built, in 1809, on the East Windsor village green as a Union church by Methodists and Episcopalians. In 1832, the Methodists built their own church and the church became the St. John's Episcopalian Church. In 1844, Charles S. Phelps of New York donated land to the church and the building was moved to its present site across the street from the village green.

The white, wood fame structure has a tall single story design. The façade has a projecting section with a set of steps leading up to a double door entrance framed by an arch supported by Ionic piasters. A ramp was installed on the south side of the entrance. Above is stained-glass Palladian window and a pediment with a fan window. A gold colored cross is located at the apex of the pediment's gable roof.

The main block has a four-sided clock tower rising from the apex of the gable roof. Above the clock tower is a square belfry with louvered windows. The sides of the main block are four bays wide with tall stained glass windows with rounded tops at each bay. A two bay wide addition projects from the back of the church.
