Department of Highways Ontario Land Survey Marker - Welland, ON - Canadian Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

This land survey marker is located just off of Schisler Road, east of Welland, Ontario, across the Welland Canal. This marker was placed by the Department of Highways Ontario (shortened to D.H.O.) and doesn't have a number or code on it. It does have a slot for a rod.

This marker gives an insight at what this road once was, as what is now a dead end side road usually isn't worthy of Dept. of Highway markers. This section of Schisler Road used to be Oxford Road, which would have gone through what is now the Welland Canal. (Check the map and you can see Oxford Road still exists on the west side of the canal).

Checking a map you can also see the faint path that Oxford Road would have took connecting directly to Regional Road 27/Schisler Road east, rather then the bend connecting to Moyer Road we have today.

My theory is that this marker was installed at this location during the rerouting of the road to Moyer Road, the marker's position in the bend was necessary to get the curve right for work crews constructing the road.

After the road's completion the marker was no longer needed and essentially abandoned. This is why it was not given a unique designation code and does not appear on government websites.
