The railway line used to connect the city of Hull with the coastal resort of Hornsea. In the days before people had their own cars it provided a 13 mile corridor between the two places.

As time has moved on and wildlife is under threat of extinction from a variety of sources the line provides a corridor for wildlife.

Whilst the line is actively used for recreational uses and managed as such it is less likely to be built upon providing a habitat for plants, insects birds and mammals.

This short stretch is actually one part of a 217 mile long route, the Trans Pennine Trail which provide a mainly off road route right across the width of England from Southport on the West Coast to Hornsea on the East Coast, using former railway lines, riverside paths, canals, and country parks.

It also links into a National Network of 5200 miles of traffic free cycle routes which forms a large network of routes for wildlife as well as walkers, cyclists and in some places horse riders.
