The small town of Leuchars is situated in the north-eastern part of the Kingdom of Fife on the east coast of Scotland. Known largely for its army base, formerly an R.A.F. base, its railway station is an important stopping point, being the final stop on the East Coast Line before the journey north over the Tay Bridge to the city of Dundee, and also the prime station for the ancient university town of St.Andrews, five miles to the south-east, after the closing of the line there in the late 1960s.
The station was opened on June 1st 1878 as Leuchars Junction, with the main line and branch junctions heading to Tayport and St.Andrews. Suspected arson saw the station building being destroyed by fire in 1913, and the current building dates from then.
The line to Tayport closed in 1967, and was followed by St.Andrews two years later, with the station now called Leuchars, although it is now also referred to as 'Leuchars for St.Andrews.
The station lies on the south-western edge of the town adjacent to a sizeable car park.
