"The Monument to the Peasant is a work of the Lanzarote artist César Manrique. It is located in the center of the island of Lanzarote, the municipality of San Bartolomé and was the public declaration of César Manrique to the efforts of the men and women of the Lanzarote countryside. It is one of the most emblematic sculptural works of him and already one of the iconographic symbols of the island.

History
Also called the Monument to Fertility, this sculpture was raised in 1969 as a symbol of the fertility of the rural lands of Lanzarote and it pays tribute to the farmer and shows the appreciation that César Manrique had for farmers. It also consolidated its artistic career. The work is complemented by La Casa Museo al Campesino, an old farmhouse restored and expanded by the artist and which sought to safeguard the Canarian architectural style. Like almost all the exterior works of the artist in Lanzarote, Jesús Soto was in charge of making this monument, which due to its technical complexity and environmental conditions, had to be developed in concrete and iron. It is an example of avant-garde and modern art that this Conejero artist knew how to blend with the natural environment. It is located right in the geographic center of the island.
Building
The statue, which is approximately 15 meters high, was created from water tanks from old fishing boats. It rests on a pile of arranged stones called La Peña de Tajaste. The skill in the placement of the cubic elements manages to symbolize a person on a pack animal. This monument ends with another of the wonders of Manrique's identity: the traditional architecture of Lanzarote that is revealed in La Casa-Museo del Campesino. The old restored farmhouse is white and green and is decorated with cultural elements related to the countryside such as cisterns, wineries, chimneys, threshing floors, etc. Its floor plan is semicircular and is structured around an open central square from where several rooms are distributed. Inside we can contemplate numerous objects and tools related to the island culture that allow the visitor to recover a large part of the island's history and its traditions."
