Due to overcrowding conditions of the existing First Congregational Church, the Easthampton Congregational Church was organized on May 3, 1852 and the church, designed by Arland Augustus Dirlam in the Romanesque Revival style, was completed later in 1852. The first services in the new church were held in January 1853. The church was named after Payson Williston, the town's first minister. In January, 1854, the church was destroyed by fire and rebuilt only to be once again destroyed by fire on September 1, 1854. It was rebuilt again and rededicated on September 6, 1855. The original First Congregational Church was destroyed in 1929. MACRIS Fact Sheet: (visit link)

The Easthampton Congregational Church is a brick church with a slate covered gable roof and built on a stone foundation. The bricks are painted white. The west facing façade has a central tower that protruded from the main block of the church. Two stone steps lead up to the recessed doorway which is a double set of Romanesque arched windows. The third level has a single Romanesque window. The fourth level has a circular window. This is followed by a belfry with a triple set of louvered windows. The tower is topped by a 123' high tapered octagonal steeple in which is embedded a four sided clock. Flanking the tower, on the main block of the church is a single Romanesque window on the first floor and a narrow window on the second floor which is framed by an arch supported by a pair of narrow columns.

The sides of the church are four bays wide. The first and second floors are separated by a course of bricks. The lower level has 4 by 4 by 4 by 4 windows at each bay. The upper level has 8 by 8 by 8 windows with rounded tops at each bay.
